Radical Reads: Health and Healthcare

Date: Tuesday, April 20, 2021
Time: 3:00pm – 4:30pm
Location: Online

Welcome! Radical Reads (Rad Reads) is a monthly discussion group dedicated to challenging the status quo to create a more caring and just world through reading, listening, conversation and action. As we navigate a global public health crisis, increasing income inequality, systemic racism and police violence, housing and food insecurity, and many other inequities in our world, we must be able to understand how we arrived at our present moment and learn from the struggle of the past in order to respond to the crises we face today. This discussion series will use readings, podcasts, and other media to engage community members in current social, political, and economic issues through a critical, abolitionist lens.

For more information, topic suggestions, or if you’d like to get involved in organizing our gatherings, contact Jo Thompson, jothompson@bmcc.cuny.edu or jean amaral, jamaral@bmcc.cuny.edu.

Spring 2021, we will meet via Zoom on the following dates:

Tuesday, March 2nd, 3:00-4:30pm – Policing, jails, prisons, and abolition
Thursday, March 25th, 3:00-4:30pm – Housing justice
Tuesday, April 20th, 3:00-4:30pm – Health and healthcare
Tuesday, May 11th, 3:00-4:30pm – Migration and borders

Imaginarium: Comics & Animation

Date: Tuesday, April 20, 2021
Time: 12:00pm – 1:30pm

The world before us in 2021 requires imagination and creativity as we are called to envision and build a just and equitable society for all.

At their heart, superhero comics are about hope. Hope in the face of adversity, hope in the face of injustice. From Black Panther to Kamala Khan, comics provide the opportunity to reimagine ourselves, our lives, and the society we live in, to create a vision of the future where every day people–you and all of us in the BMCC community–save our world.

Join us to create your own comic telling your story of triumph. Create your own villain and turn yourself into your own superhero.

No experience necessary! We’ll provide a template to create a splash page for our superhero identities.

RSVP for the Zoom link and suggested materials.

This semester we’re conducting a survey because we want to know if the BMCC Library website is meeting the needs of the BMCC Community and identify areas where we can improve.

The survey is brief and takes fewer than five minutes to complete. No personal information is collected.

While the survey is open to all members of the BMCC Community, students who take the survey can enter a raffle to win one of a limited number of Amazon gift cards ranging from $25-$100.

If you have any questions, you can contact Rebecca Hyams, Web and Systems Librarian and Assistant Professor in the BMCC Library. Any questions or comments can be sent by email to rhyams@bmcc.cuny.edu.

Funding for this study has been provided through a PSC-CUNY Grant for 2020-21.
