Types of Online Courses

Online Synchronous = Online with live meetings

If there are meeting times listed, then it is synchronous/live and you should be prepared to participate in these classes just like you did before COVID, except online via Zoom or Blackboard Collaborate.

Online Asynchronous = Online with no live meetings

If classes have the date and time listed as "TBA," then it is an asynchronous class and you will not meet live. Instead, you will complete the assignments online on your own time to meet the deadlines presented by your instructor.

Hybrid = Mix of on-campus meetings and online work

Hybrid courses have a blend of on-campus meetings and work online. Meeting times will be specified in the course listing, and for these you are expected to join the class on campus. Other course activities outside of those times will be carried out online.

Office of Accessibility

Now that my classes have been moved online, how do I “attend” class?

Students will be contacted by their instructors on how to proceed with online learning. Policies regarding class attendance, tests, and other coursework will be determined on a class-by-class basis. Keep a look out for an email from them. If you do not hear from them, be proactive and contact them directly.

Unemployment Information (posted 4/1/2020)

City and State officials have released information on additional unemployment resources as a result of the CARE Act that was passed on 3/27/20. Specifically there are new and additional unemployment benefits called Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) that is available to those who are not typically eligible for unemployment insurance including self-employed/1099 workers, part time workers, and those who were not working for an extended period of time. Impacted students can apply by phone or online. We encourage all campuses to share this information with all students broadly via digital, faculty, student affairs and general college communications. More information can be found at: https://labor.ny.gov/ui/pdfs/pandemic-unemployment-assistance.pdf and https://www.labor.ny.gov/ui/cares-act.shtm.

Counseling Center Information

BMCC Counseling Center is committed to continuing to support all students with their personal and academic counseling needs.

All services are in the process of being moved online or accessible remotely. The means in which we will provide ongoing services will depend on the individual needs of the student and be decided through a series of conversations with the student’s counselor. The services can be provided via phone, video conferencing or email. We are aware that not all students have access to a computer, reliable internet or a private space. We are therefore trying to be creative so we can be a support to all BMCC students.

The details of our services are still being discussed and may change, so we ask students to continue checking their BMCC email and the website for any updates.

Please email the Counseling Center at counselingcenter@bmcc.cuny.edu with any questions. A counselor will respond to you within 24 hours during open business hours. If a student knows who their counselor is, they can also email their counselor directly for information and to schedule a time to speak.
