Academic Programs

Spring 2022 Update

All academic programs will be offered in a hybrid model (some in-person and some remote components) for the Spring 2022 semester.  Please review the student vaccination policy for attending in-person classes and services and Center access guidelines at the Info for Students page.

On the TABE 11/12, all academic programs must have an NRS Level of 2 or better with the minimum test score listed below.  At this time TABE 9/10 scores are still being accepted if submitted with an application and are provided for reference.


Literacy Development

Students further develop their vocabulary, reading and test-taking skills, using instructor-led classes and computer-based instruction. Prospective students should demonstrate and interest in an academic program of study.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS:

TABE 9/10 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 4.0 – 5.9, Math 4.0
TABE 11/12 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 465, Math 440


Numeracy

Students strengthen their math abilities through this program. Students focus solely on building their math skills to retake the TABE test to be admitted to another Manhattan EOC program. After successful completion of the program students will be able to test for other MEOC programs.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS:

TABE 9/10 Minimum Placement Scores: Math 4.0 – 5.9
TABE 11/12 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 465, Math 430


Developmental Study Skills

Students improve basic math, reading, writing and test-taking skills. This is a great place to start for adult learners who have been out of school for a while. After successful completion of the program students will be able to test for other MEOC programs.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS:

TABE 9/10 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 6.0, Math: 5.0
TABE 11/12 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 480, Math 467


English for Speakers of Other Languages

Students learn English the way they learned their first language by doing everyday things like expressing feelings, asking for directions and playing games. This approach creates a low-anxiety environment where students are able to draw on their own life experiences.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS:

TABE CLAS-E Minimum Placement Scores Reading: 2.0 in two areas of the exam
TABE 11/12 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 442


Introduction to High School Equivalency

Students improve their skills in reading, writing, math, science and social studies in preparation for the High School Equivalency (HSE) exam, the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC). Upon successful completion of the program, students may enroll in the HSE Program or be recommended to take the TASC, the official HSE exam. Students are given the official Readiness Assessment (RA) to assess readiness for the Official HSE exam.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS:

TABE 9/10 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 7.0, Math: 6.0
TABE 11/12 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 489, Math 475


High School Equivalency

Students strengthen their test-taking skills in reading, writing, math, science and social studies in preparation for the HSE exam. Students are given official Readiness Assessment (RA) to assess readiness for the Official HSE exam. Previous official HSE results are taken into consideration where applicable.

TABE 9/10 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 9.0, Math 8.0


College Prep

Students further develop their critical reading, writing and math skills in preparation for college level classes. Adult learners who have been out of school for a number of years, who have received their high school equivalency diploma, and/or who want to boost up their academic skills prior to going to college would benefit from this program. In addition, students prepare for college placement exams. Previous college entrance exam results are taken into consideration where applicable.

TABE 9/10 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 9.0, Math 7.5
TABE 11/12 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 501, Math 500
