Career Training

A High School Diploma or its equivalent is a prerequisite of all Career Training Programs. All costs associated with gaining a license or certification in all of our Career Training Programs are covered by the MEOC for students who successfully complete the program.

Spring 2022 Update

Career Training programs will be offered in a fully in-person or hybrid model (some in-person and some remote components) for the Spring 2022 semester Please see information below by program.

On the TABE 11/12, all career training programs must have an NRS Level of 3 or better with the minimum test score listed below. At this time TABE 9/10 scores are still being accepted if submitted with an application and are provided for reference.

The following programs will be offered in a fully in-person model for the Spring 2022 semester:

ALLIED HEALTH PROGRAMS

Certified EKG Technician Program

The Certified Electrocardiography or EKG Technician Program prepares students for employment in the healthcare industry. The core components of the program include EKG Fundamentals, preparation for National Healthcare Association® (NHA) EKG Technician Certification (CET) exam, EKG Clinical and Career Development support.  Upon completion of the program, students will sit for the NHA CET exam. EKG Technicians operate noninvasive equipment which print graphic tracings of electrical impulses transmitted by the heart.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS:

TABE Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 10.0, Math 7.5
TABE 11/12 Minimum Placement Scores: Reading 501, Math 500
Prerequisite: Current CNA certification or Anatomy & Physiology coursework

Certified Phlebotomy Training

Students prepare for careers as a Phlebotomist or Phlebotomy Technician to work in medical facilities, including hospitals, laboratories, doctors’ offices, home health agencies, research clinics and blood banks. Hands-on training through classroom instruction is offered. Students prepare for the National Health Career Association® (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam.

Certified Electronic Health Records

Students prepare for employment in hospitals, clinics and physician offices working as an Electronic Health Records Specialist. Microsoft® Word and Excel workshops are included to enhance students’ medical office skills. Students participate in an internship to gain everyday work experience in electronic health records.

Certified Medical Administrative Assistant Program

The Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) Program prepares students for employment in a variety of clerical support positions within the healthcare field.  Medical Administrative Assistants are skilled multi-taskers who direct the flow of patients through a medical office. Students in this program will receive training in maintenance of medical records, medical terminology, basics of medical billing and coding, office procedures, providing effective customer service, scheduling and confirming patient appointments, database and keyboarding skills and other office administrative skills. The curriculum includes HIPAA training as well. Upon completion of this course the student will be prepared for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) national certification exam offered by National Health Career Association® (NHA).

Certified Nursing Assistant

Students prepare to care for individuals in nursing homes under the supervision of the nursing and medical staff. Students prepare for the New York State Certified Nurse Aide exam and become CPR certified.

HOSPITALITY, SAFETY, AND SECURITY PROGRAMS

Hospitality Training Program

Students further develop skills in customer service and the hospitality industry as they gain hands-on experience in a restaurant or hotel setting and earn nationally recognized certifications such as the ManageFirst® certification from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF).  The program has two tracks: Food Service and Hotel/Tourism Management.

OSHA

The OSHA 30-hour for Construction and the 10-hour SST classes are a component of the OSHA program. Students learn the fundamentals of promoting workplace safety and health as well as preventing workplace hazards and their rights. Topics include communicating OSHA laws, understanding chemical and electrical hazards and overall health and safety in the workplace. Upon completion of the program, students receive the General Industry or Construction Card as appropriate.

Security Officer Training

Students prepare for careers as State Licensed Security Guards. Students complete the 8-hour pre-assignment training and 16-hour job training. Preparation for the NYC Fire Department Certificate of Fitness as a Fire Guard is provided. Prerequisites include online learning modules in preparation for certification.

OFFICE SUPPORT AND CIVIL SERVICE PREPARATION PROGRAMS

Civil Service Exam Preparation

Students improve their general math and vocabulary skills needed to attain higher placement on the “eligible-to-hire” list for the Civil Service positions with the City of New York, the State of New York and Federal Government in this program designed to ease test-taker anxiety.
