Dr. Anika Thrower, BMCC Faculty, Health Education Department
Dr. Anika Thrower earned her B.S. in consumer science/nutrition from Norfolk State University and both her MPH and Ph.D. in public health and community health from Walden University. Asa health practitioner, Dr. Thrower served in Women, Infants, and Children’s (WIC) programs around the United States for over 16years. Because of her background, service, and research, she has expertise in utilizing the transtheoretical behavioral health model in underrepresented populations. Appointed by the mayor, she co-chaired the New Haven Food Policy Council. Along with others, Dr. Thrower’s work led to establishing the city’s first Food Action Plan. She serves as an Assistant Professor within the Health Education department at City University of New York-Borough of Manhattan Community College. Before her current position, Dr. Thrower taught at Springfield College and Southern Connecticut State University. She teaches coursework in stress management and community health education rooted in culturally responsive pedagogy. Dr. Thrower’s research interests include investigating mental health and food security issues that adversely affect women’s quality of life and other members of underrepresented populations. She advocates maternal & child health and is seeking ways to close gaps in higher education attainment.
Janah Boccio, PhD Candidate in Sexuality Education at Widener University
Janah Boccio, LCSW, MEd, has over 13 years of experience working with students, parents and educators about sex and sexuality. In addition to having experience working as a social worker at an independent school in New York City, Janah maintains a psychotherapy practice where she works with adolescents and adults focusing mainly on gender and sexuality as well as anxiety and life transitions. Janah has created workshops and written advice columns for parents and caregivers on how to talk to kids about sex and sexuality, and has presented to parents and Pre-K through 12th grade educators on gender and sexuality development as both a consultant in schools and at various conferences. Janah received her BA in Psychology from Macalester College, her MSW from the Smith College School for Social Work, and her MEd from Widener University. She is currently working towards her PhD in Sexuality Education at Widener University.
