Service Learning in the Classroom: An Experiential Learning Opportunity for BMCC Faculty

Are you interested in an approach to teaching and learning that:

• Promotes engaged learning through active student participation?

• Amplifies teaching and extends your classroom with real, community-based opportunities to apply skills, confirm or challenge theory?

• Provides time and space for students to reflect and make meaning of what they’ve learned?

• Fosters a sense of civic identity and personal agency?

• Has decades of empirical research proving gains in school connectedness, interpersonal communication, retention, graduation, and career preparation, especially among historically marginalized students?

Before the summer begins, prioritize your professional growth and apply to join your colleagues for this hands-on workshop on service learning pedagogy. Bring your laptop, a syllabus and your teaching experience for a deep dive in the waters of applied, community-based service learning.  

Participants will receive a $300 stipend for the day. Additional summer support will be available for faculty planning to incorporate service learning in a Fall 2018 class.

Workshop Facilitator: Claire King, EdD (Guttman Community College)
Youth advocate and educator, Claire King began her K-16 teaching career in the South Bronx, NY. Claire taught in the Humanities both at Martin University and Indiana University-Bloomington where she also developed and taught undergraduate entry and capstone courses for the Leadership, Ethics and Social Action minor and graduate courses in community-based service-learning. In Academic Affairs at IU’s flagship campus, Claire directed the University’s Office of Service-Learning and grew what became a nationally and internationally replicated collegiate service-learning leadership model with under-represented students employed as liaisons between local nonprofits, faculty, and Student Affairs. Coming full circle back to New York City in 2012, Dr. King has been able to bring to Guttman Community College her love for young people, experiential teaching and learning, and instructional coaching for the last six years.

This workshop is organized by CETLS, the BMCC Learning Academy, and the Office of Internships and Experiential Learning.
