Professor Consenstein will discuss the history and particularities of French translations of Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark. He will focus on the work of a poet-translator, Jacques Roubaud, who transforms Carroll’s unique and innovative style into a new, unique French style. This work was presented in October 2014 at Johns Hopkins University within the framework of a research program funded by the French Agence nationale de la recherche, which targets the “differences of potential” of the group Oulipo (http://difdepo.hypotheses.org/).
Professor Margaret Carson, a literary translator from Spanish, will respond to Professor Consenstein’s presentation.
