Vice President for Student Affairs
Dr. Marva M. Craig, Vice President for Student Affairs at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), has worked in diverse areas of higher education as a leader, an administrator and a professor. Dr. Craig’s vision is to provide students with a holistic higher education experience, fostering not only their academic advancement, but also their personal growth and development. It is an approach that encourages lifelong learning and responsible citizenship.
Guided by this vision, she expanded the range of services offered by BMCC’s Department of Student Affairs to better support a well-rounded learning experience, student success and degree completion for a diverse student body. Dr. Craig introduced the concept of “boutique” or customized retention-focused programs that fit the needs of a large student population – one student at a time. By diving deeply into the college’s database to create programs that provide individualized guidance, BMCC meets each student’s holistic needs, helps remove obstacles to student success and fosters retention.
Dr. Craig developed and later revamped BMCC’s Co-Curricular Transcript (CCT), a comprehensive and certified record of students’ achievements and competencies outside of the classroom. Dr. Craig also created partnerships with organizations like the Financial Planning Association of New York (FPANY) to develop a series of free seminars, facilitated by Certified Financial Planners, to teach students the fundamentals of financial literacy and fiscal responsibility.
Dr. Craig has presented at numerous national conventions to wide acclaim; her extensive knowledge of student affairs and her intimate understanding of community college students, faculty and staff lead to speaking engagements at various events.
Dr. Craig earned her Associate degree at BMCC, received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College/CUNY, and her Master’s degree from New York University. She is also a graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University, where she earned her doctorate.
