Dean of Student Affairs
Michael Hutmaker is BMCC’s Dean for Student Affairs. Over his 22 years of working with college students, he has distinguished himself as a student advocate and as an energetic and visionary administrator establishing programs that enhance the college experience for students. Working along with the Vice President for Student Affairs, Dean Hutmaker champions the holistic collegiate experience through opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. In addition, he has been instrumental in developing and leading collaborative projects between Academic and Student Affairs.
Prior to joining the college in 2009, he was Dean for Student Affairs at Polytechnic University (now NYU Tandon School of Engineering) from 2004-2009 where he led the division that included Athletics, Career Services, Counseling Center, Residence Life and Student Development. Prior to his tenure at Polytechnic, Dr. Hutmaker spent 10 years at St. John’s University (NYC). There he served as Associate Dean of Student Life and Director of Residence Life. In this role he spearheaded the creation of the first Residence Life Program for the university, oversaw Intramural and Recreation Services, (including design of the new Fitness Center), served as Advisor to Greek Life, supervised multicultural programming, and disability services. He was instrumental in enhancing the New Student Orientation program, Student Activities and Leadership Development. He also worked at Clemson University (SC) in a similar capacity while working on his graduate degree. He also has experience at Rutgers University and Raritan Valley Community College (NJ).
Dr. Hutmaker holds a BA from Rutgers University (double major in Psychology and Sociology and double minor in Criminology and Biology), a Master of Education in Counseling and Guidance Services from Clemson University and a Doctor of Education in Administration and Supervision from St. John’s University. He has been recognized as Outstanding Young Man of America and is a member of Mensa International. He has presented at numerous conferences to students and colleagues.
