Description and Curriculum Overview
This module is an introduction to telecommunications networks. It covers the fundamentals of networking concepts, such as networking media, topology, switching, and management. It will also include an introduction to Open System Interface (OSI) layered organization and the functionality of each layer. Additionally, this module provides a comprehensive introduction of network security, its use and implementation. Students will be introduced to general security, communication security, infrastructure security, cryptography, operational/organizational security and physical security. Students will gain practical skills and learn techniques of detecting and correcting security vulnerabilities. Students are expected to complete several assignments preparing for CompTIA Security+ professional IT certification.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Identify the different types of telecommunication networks and OSI seven-layer standards.
- Analyze and describe computer network building blocks and their functions.
- Interpret network designs and management methods for networks.
- Justify the choice of topologies, protocols and transmission media for appropriate networks.
- Identify the physical security and its properties and uses
- Configure and manage various network devices
