African Heritage Month: Mental Health Awareness Presentation and Conversation

February 9, 2017 at 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
| Room S-737 at 199 Chambers St.

Listen to renowned mental health advocate Professor James Banks, Multicultural Coordinator and Licensed Social Worker from Suffolk County Community College, as he delves into the causes and impacts of mental health on minority communities.

Known as “Dr. Love”, he will engage the audience while examining the familial and cultural reasons why some minority students avoid conversations about their mental health, including depression and anxiety. Since hurt and loss often precede depression, participants will identify losses and feelings and share them, identify core issues, and establish a plan for recovery.

Furthermore, participants will discuss differing in-session language to be used for cultural sensitivity and will establish supportive attitudes necessary when recommending mental health treatment for students.
