What is Haiku?

  • Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry.
  • A Haiku poem has 3 lines of 17 syllables – consisting of 5, 7, & 5 syllables, respectively.
  • The rules for writing Haiku in Japanese are strict, but in other languages it is simpler.
  • Example from a Haiku Master, Murakami, Kijo (1865-1938):
    (5) First autumn morning
    (7) the mirror I stare into
    (5) shows my father’s face.

Contest Rules

  • Runs from April 1-19, 2016
  • The winning poem receives a $25 Barnes & Noble Gift Card AND a FREE dinner at BMCC’s 28th Annual Asian Heritage Month Dinner on Thursday, April 21, 2016
  • Winners will be announced on April 20, 2016
  • Every Haiku poem MUST contain any variation of the word NOTE
  • Professor Dorothea Coiffe (Library) coordinates the annual Can You Haiku? Contest
  • Contest judges are Profs Dorothea Coiffe & Syeda Begum
