Kalief Browder was arrested at the age of 16 for allegedly stealing a backpack. Charged as an adult, Kalief could not afford the $3,000 required bail and was therefore imprisoned at Rikers Island, for over 1,000 without a trial or conviction. He spent 400 days in solitary confinement. Charges were dismissed and Kalief was released three years after his arrest. He enrolled at Bronx Community College, but as a consquence of his experience at Rikers he faced mental health challenges. Browder died by suicide in 2015.
