Introduction to Participatory Budgeting in New York City

March 28, 2019 at 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
| Main Campus | Room N-451

What is participatory budgeting and how can it help you?

This event will introduce students to participatory budgeting, how it works, and how to get involved. There will be a new Civic Engagement Commission implemented in the next month to bring more New Yorkers into the participatory budgeting process citywide, so it is a great moment for students to learn how to get more involved.

In addition, Melissa Appleton will detail the criminal justice projects in NYC that have been funded using participatory budgeting, as well introduce us to a pilot currently being run by the participatory budgeting project on participatory justice in NYC.

About Melissa Appleton
Melissa Appleton is a project manager at the Participatory Budgeting Project. Melissa manages the implementation of participatory budgeting projects and innovations across the U.S. and Canada. With over eight years of experience supporting group and inter-personal dialogue as a facilitator, mediator, and trainer at the largest community mediation organization in the US (New York Peace Institute), she brings a passion for collective decision-making to participatory budgeting. Melissa is happy to be supporting group deliberation with diverse communities more locally after doing conflict resolution work internationally in Timor-Leste, Kosovo, and Israel.
