Learn about the results of a survey of online learners at CUNY, and discuss implications for enrollment, retention, and student success in online and hybrid courses. BMCC Professors Kay Conway, Alyse Hachey, and Claire Wladis have been conducting this survey of students from across CUNY since fall 2014, and will continue the survey through the next year.
Students are asked about their reasons for enrolling in an online course, about work and family factors that likely impact both online enrollment decisions and course/college outcomes, and about their time use. They are also asked about various attitudes and skills that might be relevant to online enrollment or course outcomes such as motivation, engagement, academic integration, self-directed learning skills, time management skills, and preference for autonomy.
Roughly 30,000 survey responses have been collected to date. All students enrolled in a CUNY course with at least one online or hybrid section were invited to participate, which gave researchers the opportunity to analyze reponses from students who took the same course in different formats (fully online, hybrid, or face-to-face). Researchers also analyzed the impact of affective and demographic fators, as well at STEM vs. non-STEM differences.
