The ability to think clearly and critically about numerical information is crucial not only to academic success, but also personal decision-making and political participation. Many adults, however, have tremendous anxiety about reasoning with numbers. The Quantitative Literacy Across the Curriculum program is seeking faculty who want to join us in supporting the development of quantitative reasoning skills among BMCC students.
We invite all faculty to an information session to discuss the program. If you plan to attend, please contact Margaret Dean at mdean@bmcc.cuny.edu .
What is quantitative literacy (QL)?
To learn more about the QLAC initiative at BMCC before attending the session on March 29th, you might want to read an article which appears in the Winter 2014/2015 volume of the Inquirer, written by three members of the BMCC QL Coordinating Committee, entitled “Making BMCC Quantitatively Literate: Reflecting on the Importance of QL in the Classroom.”
What to expect from your QLAC participation?
Faculty will partner with QLAC fellows and receive personal assistance in establishing and meeting QL integration goals. Together, they will build on existing curricula to incorporate QL lessons, activities, and assessments. By doing this, faculty will increase student competency both with quantitative reasoning, and with existing course concepts, providing a more in-depth understanding of course material. In providing QLAC fellows with feedback about QL needs, successes and failures, QLAC faculty participants will provide fellows with guidance in the design and structure of a program which will train future faculty members to better incorporate QL into their courses.
Participating faculty will be eligible to earn a stipend. More than 24 BMCC faculty have already participated, designing and teaching QL-intensive syllabi, and some will be present on the 29th to discuss their experience.
We hope to see you on March 29th!
