Radical Reading Group

December 12, 2018 at 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
| Main Campus | Library, 199 Chambers Street, Room S410

The radical reading group began 2 years ago when a group of students, faculty and staff came together to read, discuss, and think together about radical ideas that are all too often not a part of the everyday discourse of our political world. Last year, the radical reading group teamed up with the BMCC Library, and besides hosting the events, the Library also adds each radical book to its collection, and offers limited number of copies of each book to students on a first come first serve basis. The group meets once a month, on the 4th Wednesday from 4-6pm in the library “reading nook” to the left of the main entrance, to discuss a book and other activism and organizing the members are interested or involved in. The group operates on a consensus model of decision making, meaning that everyone has a say in how the group runs and what books are read. For the last year we have aligned out reading to various History/Herstory/Pride/Heritage months on campus.

For this meeting, we will discuss Confessions of the Fox by Jordy Rosenberg. Set in the eighteenth century London underworld, this bawdy, genre-bending novel reimagines the life of thief and jailbreaker Jack Sheppard to tell a profound story about gender, love, and liberation.

The Radical Reading Group is organized by Jean Amaral (Library) and Benjamin Haas (Speech, Communications, and Theatre Arts). Please contact the organizers for more information or to RSVP.
