“Stand Up and Speak Out” Social Justice Event: Homelessness

The BMCC Library is proud to present another session in our “Stand Up and Speak Out” Social Justice Series. For this first session of the fall 2021 semester we will be discussing homelessness.

In a 2019 study, more than half of CUNY undergraduate students had experienced housing insecurity in the prior year; for students at the CUNY community colleges, 63% had struggled with housing and 18% had experienced homelessness. Although the full impact of COVID-19 on student housing stability is still unclear, we know that students’ food insecurity increased dramatically during the pandemic, and it is likely that student housing insecurity and homelessness will also rise as eviction moratoriums and other protections are lifted.

While there are supports in place at all of the CUNY community colleges to support students and their basic needs, there has been little discussion about student homelessness and housing deprivation as a social justice issue. During this session we will look at the data on community college student homelessness, the supports available for students, and how students and other members of campus communities can move beyond providing supports to a critical questioning of why students cannot meet their basic needs and how to dismantle and restructure systems and services that perpetuate these inequities.
