Women’s HerStory Month: Sin by Silence Film Screening and Panel Discussion

March 25, 2019 at 1:00 pm - 3:45 pm
| Main Campus | Room S-635

The event consists of a screening of the documentary film Sin by Silence and a subsequent panel discussion. The film portrays a group of female inmates, who all serve life sentences for having murdered their abusers, and who have decided to form an advocacy group, “Convicted Women Against Abuse,” with the purpose of educating the public about domestic violence and advocating for a change in the perception of DV by the judiciary. The discussion will center on highlighting the dynamics of intimate partner violence, the need for more appreciation in judiciary of the devastating impact of DV on female offenders, and of the role gender plays in sentencing (women tend to get much harsher sentences for killing male abusers than vice versa).
