Women’s Herstory Month: Sweet Georgia Brown w/ Producer Lawrence Walker

Screening and discussion of Sweet Georgia Brown, focuses on Black women who served in the military during World War II.

The number of Black women recruited for the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) was limited to 10% of the total recruits, and enlisted women served in segregated units, participated in segregated training, lived in separate quarters, ate at separate tables in mess halls, and used segregated recreation facilities.

Black women were not even allowed to enlist in the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) until 1944. The documentary traces this history of segregation and the struggle for equality in the US military. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Mr. Lawrence Walker, Producer and Director.
