Faculty Development Grant

The Faculty Development Grant was established in the 1990s at the initiative of the Faculty Development Committee of the BMCC Academic Senate. It is organized and administered by the Faculty Development Committee and funded by the Office of Academic Affairs. Its purpose is to support full-time faculty members in their scholarly and creative activity. Full-time faculty throughout the college are encouraged to apply. Faculty may apply only as individuals.

The 2022 Grant applications

  • The grant funds the projects up to $3,000.
  • Full-time tenured or tenure track faculty may request fees not limited to attending virtual/remote and in-person conferences, publications, materials and supplies.
  • Money will be disbursed upon proof of executed activities. However, the awardee could receive one-half of the amount ($1500) at the mid-point of the project if they demonstrate satisfactory progress as determined by an appropriate designee appointed by Academic Affairs.
  • At this time, reassigned time and summer salary cannot be requested.
  • Faculty who do not meet the eligibility requirements for submitting proposals, including submitting an anonymous proposal, will not be considered.
  • Grant recipients will be required to submit a one-page report after the end of the grant period with the outcomes and results of their project to the official designate of Academic Affairs. Failure of submitting this report will affect eligibility for future applications. This report will be posted on the Academic Senate website.

Timeline

  • April 1st, 2022 at 11:59 p.m.is the due date for complete applications. Late applications will not be accepted.
  • June 2022: Academic Affairs will notify faculty about the status of the proposals.
  • July 2022: Start of the 2022-2023 cycle.
  • June 2023: End of the 2022-2023 cycle.

Eligibility Requirements

  • I am a full-time faculty member at BMCC as of September 2021.
  • I have not received or applied for any other BMCC or CUNY grants/funds for this proposed project, nor have I applied for or received funding from any outside source (including PSC-CUNY, Research in the Classroom Grant, CC Research Grant).
  • The proposed project is within the guidelines, policies, and restrictions of the IRB and copyright laws.
  • I have no other work-related commitments that conflict with this research during the grant period.
  • I have not received a BMCC Faculty Development Grant for the 2020-2021 or 2021-2022 Cycles.
  • The proposal does not include any information that identified the author,

Proposal Package:

The application must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on April 1, 2022 through the online application system. No applications will be accepted by email.

The proposal package must include the following:

  • Signed and completed Cover Page (separate attachment).
  • Abstract describing the project (100 words).
  • Proposal (3-5 pages): a well-organized description of the project, single-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font. DO NOT include your name or any information that identifies you in the proposal as proposals will be evaluated by a double-blind peer review process. Applications that fail to follow these guidelines will not be considered. Following sections must be included:
  1. Project Narrative (maximum 3 pages) should include:
    1. Jargon-free language.
    2. Discussion of the purpose and broader significance of the project.
    3. Evaluation of its potential contribution to the field.
    4. Brief explanation of the applicant’s qualifications to execute the proposed project and how the project enhances the applicant’s professional development.
    5. Dissemination plan (specific journals, publications, conferences, exhibitions, performances etc.).
    6. If the work for which an applicant is seeking funding is part of a larger project, the progress made on that project must be made clear and must contain an explanation of how this grant-funded work will be incorporated within that project.
    7. Permits, copyright releases, licenses, IRB, or other authorizations necessary for execution of this project must be included.
    8. Selected bibliography might be included if appropriate as part of the 3-5 page length.
  2. Timeline:
    1. Must include a clear and attainable development plan with a completion date no later than June 30, 2023.
    2. If IRB approval is necessary, the deadlines must be clearly stated. No funding will be provided until IRB approval is obtained.
  3. Itemized Budget:
    1. The maximum grant is $3,000. This may be awarded as expenses covering supplies necessary to execute research or creative work.
    2. At this time, reassign time and summer salary cannot be requested.
    3. Applicants must include a brief justification of the budget, explaining how the grant will be used to support the project.
    4. Money will be disbursed upon proof of executed activities.
    5. If equipment is purchased, it will be reimbursed by BMCC and will become the property of BMCC.
    6. Proposals can support funding for fees to attend virtual/online and in-person conference fees. Travel must be approved.
    7. Supporting Materials (such as images, links to film clips, charts, publishing contracts, etc.) that are directly relevant to the proposed project and help establish applicant’s credentials.

The following Rubric for Evaluation will be followed to evaluate the proposals. Publications resulting from the grant should acknowledge the grant and a copy should be submitted to Senior Vice President and Provost Erwin Wong. It is encouraged that open access publications be submitted to CUNY Academic Works.
