Yolanda Medina

Associate Professor of Teacher Education Yolanda (Jolie) Medina teaches Social Foundations of Education and Art Education courses and is Coordinator of the department’s Childhood and Bilingual Childhood Education Programs.
She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies in Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and is the author of Critical Aesthetic Pedagogy: Toward a Theory of Self and Social Empowerment (2012), and co-author of Latinos/as on the East Coast (2015), and Social Foundations: Critical Essays on Teaching, Learning, and Leading in the 21st Century (2015).
Professor Medina’s contribution to the teaching and learning environment at BMCC has been as varied as moderating the panel Latinos and Education: New Findings on East Coast Diaspora, which explored the disparity between the gap in enrollment and graduation for Latino youth, to leading Mask-Making sessions in teacher education classes to examine the role of visual arts in elementary school curricula.
She is the President of the American Educational Studies Association (AESA), and Vice President of the newly established Maxine Greene Center for Aesthetic Education and Social Imagination.
