The Music and Art Department offers over 200 classes in music performance, music history and theory, studio art and art history, providing all BMCC students with opportunities to explore different visual media and musical outlets. Our faculty of professional artists, art historians and musicians teach and mentor students.
Music Program

Entrance into the Music Education and Music Performance tracks require an audition.
The Music Department provides practice rooms and music tutoring. There are numerous ensembles students can audition to join.
Art Foundations Program
Housed in the Music and Art Department, the Art Foundations Program offers an Associate in Science (A.S.) in Studio Art and Associate in Arts (A.A.) in Art History degree programs.
Studio Art majors work with BMCC art faculty to build student portfolios for successful transitions to top art and design schools. Students have opportunities to show their work–BMCC ‘s Shirley Fiterman Art Center holds an annual show of student art as well as other exhibits throughout the year. Studio Art students at BMCC can take advantage of the Art Labs as well as the Art Clubs on campus.
Art History majors take courses in major historical periods as well as the arts of diverse areas of the world. A thesis course guides students to a final comprehensive research paper.
Transfer Options
BMCC has active articulation agreements for graduates with the A.A. in Art History and the A.S. in Studio Art with Queens College–CUNY. These agreements allow students to make a seamless transition to four year colleges, assured that the courses they have taken at BMCC will count towards their major.
* Music majors who elect to take the concentration in Music Education should be aware that completion of the A.S. in music education does not guarantee admission into a music education program at CUNY’s senior colleges, nor does it ensure New York State certification. However, all the core courses in education do have articulation agreements within the CUNY system and transfer for equivalent credit. Courses within the music education concentration were developed following the guidelines of New York’s State Office of College and University Education with the intention of fulfilling some of the requirements for eventual certification.
