About the Brahms Requiem
The composer Brahms had recently suffered the loss of his mother as well as his mentor–composer Robert Schumann–when he composed the Requiem. It is a large scale piece for orchestra and chorus plus baritone and soprano soloists.
The piece begins with prayers for the dead, then moves on to words of comfort for the living. See How Brahms’s ‘A German Requiem’ Became an Anthem for Our Time.
