BMCC Nursing Program Among Seven College Nursing Programs to Earn a Best-Value Ranking of #6

The nursing program at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) earned a Best-Value #6 ranking, based on a review of 105 colleges throughout New York state. The ranking is from Nursing Explorer, a resource for nursing graduates preparing to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).

According to Kim Carlson, Nursing Explorer Outreach Coordinator, the ranking is based on two factors: the net price of the program (which counts for 30 percent of the ranking score), and the rate at which graduates pass the NCLEX (which counts for 70 percent).

“The result of the calculation is a score between one and 100 that reflects the quality of education offered at the school and affordability,” Carlson says. “If a school has a high NCLEX pass rate and low tuition — or provides a sizeable financial aid — then its ranking will be higher.”

Because some schools earned the same score, there are multiple winners of some rankings. For example, BMCC is one of seven colleges to earn the #6 ranking.

Other CUNY nursing programs earning Best-Value rankings include Lehman College, the only school to claim the #1 spot.

York College is one of three colleges in the #3 slot, and both Hunter College and NYC College of Technology are among the six schools ranked #4.

In addition, three CUNY schools; Kingsborough Community College, Queensborough Community College and Bronx Community College, scored among seven colleges in the #5 spot.

The BMCC nursing program: Mentoring, state-of-the art labs and more

The nursing program at BMCC is known for its support of students as well as its rigorous academics. Students apply classroom concepts in the BMCC Nursing Skills Laboratory, where they work with state-of-the-art human patient simulators. They work with dedicated nursing tutors, and complete rotations in public and private hospitals throughout New York City.

Opportunities for nursing students at BMCC continue even after they graduate. An extern program places graduates in externships at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn, Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan and other sites.

“The nursing program at BMCC is honored to have earned a #6 ranking out of 105 nursing programs in the Nursing Explorer’s rating for the best-value nursing programs in New York State,” said Judy Eng, chairperson of the BMCC Nursing Department. “This is a testament to the hard work of a lot of people here at BMCC. Faculty have come up with ideas, alumni have stepped forward as mentors, students have let us know what they want, and the administration has supported us every step along the way.”

As Eng explains, the nursing program at BMCC has grown steadily over the years.

“We are constantly setting goals for our department and meeting them,” she says. “We have built a strong partnership with Woodhull Medical Center to continue our graduate externship program, which places nursing graduates in the clinical setting and enables them to find good employment in the field. We have created a mentorship program with alumni, and have created a dedicated team of nursing tutors. Additionally, there are a number of BMCC programs outside of our department that benefit our nursing majors.”

BMCC does a great job supporting students, faculty and staff, “and this has helped make our nursing program very competitive,” she says. “We are proud to join other CUNY nursing programs who placed high in this statewide ranking, and altogether we reflect the value and integrity of nursing programs across the University.”
