BMCC Community,
Today is a day that we celebrate, congratulate and welcome Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States of America and Kamala Harris, who is the first woman, first black and first Asian-American to serve as our country’s Vice President.
During his inauguration speech as he calls for all Americans to come together, President Biden said, “Unity is the path forward.” With these words, I encourage all of us at Borough of Manhattan Community to reflect on the challenges we have faced these past months – the pandemic, racial injustices, and the unsettling political divide that fueled hatred and the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol – and focus on healing and unification to carry us forward into the Spring 2021 semester and beyond.
Perhaps the most important contribution each of us can make during these highly emotional times is to create a learning environment that is fully inclusive, respectful of all points of view, and most importantly safe and comfortable for all students and every member of the BMCC Community.
While this clearly needs to be the mindset for college communities each day of each year, today’s Presidential Inauguration, should encourages us to take initiative, find peace and be kind to one another.
A college’s genuine attempt to unify, or to solidify, the culture within its school community during a challenging time will undoubtedly have a positive, long-lasting, impact on the organization as a whole.
Times like these require reassurance and acknowledgment of what makes us a great institution – our faculty, our staff, and most importantly our students.
Let’s celebrate the beginning of our country’s healing and perseverance; and let us continue to follow our mission – to inspire, educate and be resilient.
