The National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at BMCC* offers paid summer internships for qualified undergraduate students to conduct biology research projects with BMCC scientists.
About the Program
This REU site is located at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) in New York, NY, as part of the City University of New York (CUNY). Our program will support the training of eight students for eight weeks during three summers of 2019-2022.
Student research will focus on the bioactivity of natural products at different biological levels of organization, e.g. the potential antioxidant capacity of natural plant products used in different human cultures; the effects of natural extracts on microorganisms in fresh water and marine environments with changing salinity; the regulation of genes involved in cellular differentiation; and the potential protective effects on growth of mammalian cells. Students will receive a $4,600 stipend, a housing allowance of $1,200 and a MetroCard.
Program highlights include:
- A fully mentored research project
- Boot camps in all aspects of scientific inquiry including biostatistics, laboratory safety, ethics and responsible conduct of research, and professional development
- Workshops in STEM careers and in scientific communication, including oral presentations and scientific writing
- Field trips
- Social events
