NanaFor President • The Students’ Voice

Dear BMCC Student Body,

I, Nana Wiafe Addae Owusu, a product of CUNY START, a member of The IMPACT Peer Mentoring program, NSLS, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, ASAP, America Needs You, and a science major, write to express my interest for the position of BMCC Student Government Association President. Harriet Tubman once said, “Every dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world”. When I was younger, my friend collapsed when we were playing soccer. Since there was no hospital in our area, we had to carry him to the closest one. Unfortunately, he died on our way to the hospital. He was one of my closest friends, and I was deeply affected by his loss. That is why my career goal is to become a doctor, especially a cardiologist, to help people who cannot afford to go to the hospital and have limited access to care.

My goal in Student Government will be to make sure that BMCC students’ voices and opinions are heard and taken into consideration by making necessary changes on things that affect them. Democracy simply means the people rule. Knowing that BMCC and CUNY are culturally diverse, I believe that student’s cultures should be respected and appreciated. That is why my first goal is to promote and encourage more culturally relevant activities.

I want to address important curriculum changes that are overdue. We have been taught using a traditional, ancient system that does not consider students’ state of mind, feelings, and creativity. We have been taught to find a job but we are yet to be taught how to transform our knowledge, talents, and skills into sustainable initiatives. I will make sure that SGA funds are directed towards trauma-based teaching, entrepreneurship and mindfulness practices. I will also do my best to prevent sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and implement the necessarily laws to ensure that BMCC creates a peaceful and conducive place for teaching and learning.

I am also running for President to challenge myself and grow. I always love to become a good leader. This cannot be done only by reading books about great leaders and philosophers like President Lincoln, Barack Obama or Aristotle but by challenging myself through leadership roles. As a science student working hard to fulfil his dream of becoming a cardiologist, I also do not close my doors to leadership opportunities. I will help as much as possible to ensure that BMCC students have access to scholarships and student clubs get enough funds.

SGA is the most powerful organization for me to give all of me and serve BMCC students.  As President I will work alongside other aspiring leaders to ensure BMCC students feel involved, considered, secure and prosperous while they work towards their degree. This will not be an easy journey but I believe I possess the strength, heart, and mindset to work in favor of students and not merely to get CCT credit. I aim to collaborate with fellow students and SGA to find solutions to students’ concerns. I am willing to bring engaging activities to unite students as well as make BMCC an exciting school to attend which could include talent shows with prizes. This will also attract more freshmen to make BMCC their start while they plan to go anywhere.

Thank you for the opportunity, time, and consideration!

Your sincerely,

Nana Wiafe Addae Owusu
