For President • Roaring Panthers
Greetings dear students, faculty, and staff members,
I am Tamanna Ali, running for President in the Student Government Association for the year 2021 – 2022. I am currently majoring in Criminal Justice and I aspire to have a career in this path. I believe in advocacy and so I volunteer at causes I deeply care about. I have participated in many debate competitions to overcome my fear in public speaking, and have enhanced my critical skills. I have also delegated in many Model United Nation conferences.
I am currently a Peer Mentor at BMCC. I have been trained to know every resource available for students at BMCC. My responsibility is to understand my mentees’ needs and wants and guide them in the right direction. As a mentor, I am their coach who constantly works toward encouraging and motivate them towards achieving their personal and academic goals. In addition, I am an Intern at New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG), part of the CUNY tuition budget cuts movement. My team and I worked tirelessly to make calls to our legislators to vote against tuition hikes and to make CUNY free of cost. Our hard work has paid off and the government proposed a new plan to our favor. I believe in choosing faith over fear and I am proud to be part of this change in reaching a prosperous deal and acknowledge it was possible for our sheer perseverance and hard work to be the voice of CUNY. I want to advocate for all BMCC students. I want to hear your concerns and give my best to help resolve them.
That is why for my presidential campaign, I am proposing a detailed plan on how I would work to better serve you. Some of the key issues I will get my office to work on immediately are:
Counseling center – Recognize that mental health is a wide range epidemic among all of us and hence, it is my priority to fix it. Expanding more resources such as workshops on support mental health, socializing events, free therapy sessions, etc.
Financial aid department – Consider the slow process of our application confirmations as a priority issue. This happens every semester and hence, it leads us to frustration and delays. Fix this issue by funding more staff and implementing faster communications, using the maximum donations and gifts in creating more scholarships for students with minimal requirements, especially for those struggling with financial issues and huge amounts due for student loans.
Career department – Creating more jobs and internship opportunities for students of all majors. Proposing an increased number of collaborative working groups from top professional companies (for example, BMCC Goldman Sachs program).
BMCC Faculty – Ensuring every professor has the right technology resources and strategies to serve the students of BMCC. As there is a possibility of not moving fully on-campus class for Fall 2021 semester. Moreover, empowering and encouraging students to share their struggles with courses due to faculty’s technical or other issues. Thus, working towards resolving it.
Last but not the least, I want to hear from you regarding the issues you faced in BMCC and how you would want me to fix it. I am looking forward to hearing from you and ADVOCATE FOR YOU; because your VOICE MATTERS.
Sincerely,
Tamanna Ali
