For the Disciplinary Committee • Independent
Hello I’m Yajahira Reyes and I’m running for the Disciplinary Committee. I’m in my second semester at BMCC and I’m in the Liberal arts program trying to find the right major for me. The reason for this is to I want to try to be more involved in my college through helping others or even trying to solve problems so students have a good college time. I’m known for looking like a punk that is looking for trouble however a quote that I believe in until this day is what can describe me and that quote is “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. With this in mind I can’t judge anyone from what they wear or what race they are. I wish to promote an environment where students can feel comfortable in school and have no problems when leaving or entering.
Many people always judged me when I was younger for my looks and piercings making me look like a punk and seemed like I was about to beat someone up. I was always misjudged and in actuality I’m scared of spiders and heights and I’m really nice. I recently got told by a McDonald employee “Did I do something wrong?” when I was squinting my eyes and somehow I seemed to look like I was angrily glaring at her. In reality I needed glasses and was only trying to read a menu above her. Now with the whole discrimination of the Black and Asian communities I wish to make a friendlier environment where students can learn and have a feeling of safety and not have someone hurt them and keep their mouths shut. No voice is too small to be heard or even ignored because our greatest weapon is our voice.
My goal for 2021-2022 is to help anyone and make their voices be heard even if it’s in writing. Through paper it may seem as a small paper that can be discarded at any time however for anyone that writes something we can often put our deepest secrets on it or take a long time while spewing emotions through the lines. We can do this while making the campus safe and comfortable so anyone that speaks up and wants to be heard can be heard. God gave us a mouth that was put there not as a decoration but a mouth that can be used to speak.
So everyone, I hope you stay safe out there even with the virus and hope that I can get this chance to serve in your Disciplinary Committee and represent Borough of Manhattan Community College.
