Field Experience in Italy
SSC 150 – 3 credits, 3 hours
Location: Sorrento, Italy
Tentative Dates: May 27 – June 18, 2022
Course Description: Taught in English, this course is designed to introduce students to the geography, history and politics of Italy. Social and economic issues of Italy will be explored, with emphasis on Italy’s pre-Roman and modern-day history. Orientation, seminars with guest lecturers, field trips to sites of historic interest, and cultural tours are an integral part of the travel program. The field experience base of operations is Sant’ Anna Institute in Italy. In addition to the Field Experience course, student participants will be required to take an Italian language course, with level to be determined via a brief oral/written test offered by the Sant’ Anna Institute faculty. For the language course, students will receive either a Diploma or Certificate of Attendance. There is the possibility that students can have the Italian language course evaluated for an additional 3 credits either in Modern Language or as an elective at a senior college within CUNY or other college / university.
Prerequisite: Completion of a 3-credit Social Science or Human Services course with a minimum ‘C’ grade
Housing and Meals: Students will reside in double and triple rooms in apartments with kitchens. Supermarket stipends will be provided for meals.
Program Fee: TBD (BMCC study abroad program fees usually range between $1,000 and $2,000, including the BMCC Association Scholarship; the fee covers international airfare, housing, meals, local program-related transportation, excursions, health insurance and any emergency costs related to COVID-19). Additional Costs: BMCC tuition and fees for 3 credits, as well as out-of-pocket costs for personal expenses, visa (if needed), tips, and out-of-pocket meals. Optional side trips to local tourist attractions may also incur additional costs.
