Writers’ Guild

Guild

The Writers’ Guild is an opportunity for BMCC students to explore their interest in writing — whether or not they have written before. All BMCC students are welcome–you don’t have to be an English major.

Here are a few Frequently Asked Questions about the Writers’ Guild:

  • When and where does the Writers’ Guild meet?
Wednesdays from  2 – 4 p.m., currently via Zoom. See the schedule of upcoming meetings.

    • Here is the Zoom Link
      Meeting ID: 824 9533 6074
      Passcode: 214978
  • Is the focus on creative writing or non-fiction?
Both–we encourage students interested in all kinds of writing to attend.
  • Do students work on projects during the semester? Are projects mentored or critiqued?
Students can work on their own, but very independently. They critique each other only if they ask for it.
  • What happens during the meetings? Are all of the meetings the same or do they vary?
The meetings vary. Sometimes we have guest speakers discussing their work. Other days, students do creative writing exercises, or share them.We also host an open mic, and last spring we went on an over night trip to Beacon, New York on May 4. We rent a space, do exercises, and socialize together.
  • Are there recommendations of resources for students interested in writing, or future career/school choices?
We discuss ways to build careers as writers at the club, among them,  the book Writing Down the Bones, and taking advantage of student literary magazines (The Guild), spoken word events around the city where young writers gather.
