The Department of Ethnic and Race Studies stands with the BMCC community to condemn systemic racism in all its forms. The painful history of injustice has brought us to where we are today. The death of Mr. George Floyd, another innocent black man killed by excessive unnecessary force by police officers forces us to take a stand to recognize the anger, heavy heart, and hopelessness experienced by so many of our students and colleagues.

We are committed to continue to teach and learn about universal human values that lead to positive change. It is central to the mission of the College, and specifically to the Department of Ethnic and Race Studies, to address these issues. Our curriculum offers opportunities for rigorous discussion and factual information to educate each other about the painful history of our country and find ways to recognize it and continue to fight for a more just society. The Ethnic and Race Studies faculty is committed to prepare our students in this process as we aim for their growth as agents of change in this multi-ethnic society.

In community,
Department of Ethnic and Race Studies

Goals

We see the pursuit of self-knowledge as both a truth-seeking project and central to self-empowerment.  We want our students to:

  • Cultivate knowledge of themselves—who they are; how they struggle with living legacies of slavery, colonialism, and racial injustices; how they are made and remade through the politics of the everyday and social movements; and above all what they are capable of achieving.
  • Develop communication skills and creativity.
  • Become imaginative thinkers, good writers, and well-informed global citizens.
  • Shape the path to success in the 21st century.
