Prepare for Interviews

Interviewing is a critical part to getting any job or internship. It is an opportunity to showcase your skill set to an employer. Being prepared is critical to landing the opportunity; practice and preparation will enhance your chances. In the job search process, interviews are crucial!

Prepare for the interview in advance

    • Research the company on their webpage, social media and in recent publications
    • Match your skill sets (Explore Your Interests) to the position
    • Set up a mock interview with a career advisor
    • Print several copies of your resume after having it reviewed by a career advisor (See Develop a Career Toolkit)
    • Portfolio, if applicable to your field

During the Interview

    • Remember to give a firm handshake, smile and introduce yourself
    • Breathe and remember everything you’ve researched and practiced-provide details from your resume to build your case as a good fit
    • Ask well thought out questions
    • Take notes
    • Ask for business cards and next steps before you leave

After the Interview

    • Send a well thought out and written thank you e-mail (PDF) within 24 hours
    • Reflect on your interview both the positive and negative aspects

Common Sample Interview Questions

  • Tell me about yourself?
  • Walk me through your resume
  • What do you know about this company?
  • Do you have any questions for me?
  • Tell me about a time you worked with a team and your role within the team?
  • What are some of you areas of strength and weakness?
  • How do you handle conflict? Provide an example?
  • What are your long and short term career goals?
  • What is your greatest accomplishment?

Salary Negotiations

Negotiating a salary with an employer can feel overwhelming; however, remembering several simple strategies will help you to feel empowered.

  • Avoid bringing salary up first!
  • Be prepared to be asked about your salary history and your salary requirements/expectations during the interview.
  • Do your homework on market values. Research the market value for the job you are applying for. See www.salary.com or Glassgoor.com for additional information.
  • Consider all aspects: For example, if medical benefits are part of your compensation package and you already have coverage, you may request a higher salary in lieu of the medical benefits. Vacation and personal days may also be negotiable.
