Community Resources

Counseling services in your community

There are many reasons a student may seek counseling outside the BMCC Counseling Center. Students seeking long-term therapy, specialized treatment, or those leaving the college shortly may choose to find a therapist they can see outside of school. Even if you are looking to start counseling somewhere else, the BMCC counselors can help you connect with a treatment provider.

Where and how to start

There is no doubt that these are difficult times. Feelings of anxiety and depression, struggles with following daily routines, interpersonal problems, or an inability to focus are among many of the normal emotions that people are experiencing. As a student, these difficulties and many others may be more challenging; moreover, there are immense pressures of keeping up with school within the context of a pandemic and the continuous exposure of police brutality as it perpetuates systemic racism.

Understanding that you might need support is a good first step. Therapy can be an important resource for you to consider if you are experiencing trouble coping or healing in any aspect of your life. Through therapy, you can meet with a therapist or a counselor in order to improve your relationships, process and resolve painful feelings, and work to change behaviors and habits that no longer serve you.

We continue to empower your choice to be the healthiest version of yourself.

Teletherapy vs. in-person counseling

Currently, most clinics offer therapy remotely, meaning meetings are held over the phone or via Zoom. Although it is different than meeting in-person, teletherapy can still be a useful and meaningful experience. It is also convenient for those that live far away and can now avoid the stresses of commuting through NYC. Some clinics offer in-person sessions (see referrals), with important safety measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Step by step guide to calling mental health providers for first visit

  1. If you get their voicemail instead of a team member, leave a message with the following info: name, phone # and let them know you’re calling to schedule an intake (first visit) appointment.
  2. If you connect with a team member when calling, inform them you’re seeking therapeutic services.
  3. You may be asked about your motivation to seek therapy at this time. You can disclose some of the issues you’d like support with (e.g. anxiety, depression, etc.).
  4. Confirm they’re accepting new patients:
    1. If there’s a wait list, ask to be added to the list
    2. Ask what the expected wait time will be
  5. Confirm they have providers that are in-network with your insurance plan. If they don’t, you can then decide if you’ll want to see them, based on the affordability of their out-of-pocket rates. Make sure to clarify the per session rates for self-pay clients. If their fee isn’t affordable for you, you can proceed to contact the next provider on your list.
  6. Ask about the earliest time you can schedule an intake.
  7. Ask to clarify any additional information/items needed before moving forward (e.g. if they provide remote services if interested).

Referral updates or questions may be shared with the Counseling Center Team
