In 2019, CUNY in the Heights (CITH) went through an administrative transition and expansion, to enhance learning opportunities for its students and members of the community.
Designed to address the needs of Inwood, Washington Heights and Upper Bronx communities, since 2013, CUNY in the Heights serves as an educational, career, and personal development opportunity center. Throughout the years, CUNY in the Heights gained favor for providing both credit-bearing and non-credit courses and certificate programs for adults, children, and teens at a reasonable cost. Thousands of students and community members have enjoyed the caring, family-like atmosphere and academic excellence that both Borough of Manhattan Community College and Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College have instilled at CUNY in the Heights during this time. These services, and more, will now be provided entirely by BMCC as part of a broader restructuring that will expand the array of educational opportunites offered and still signify the City University of New York (CUNY), the same exceptional quality.
For the 2020 spring semester, CUNY in the Heights was closed for renovations to improve its facilities and learning environment. The expansion added 15,000 square feet of space, which doubled the number of existing classrooms and triple the number of available classroom seats. The expanded facility integrates the principles of Universal Design to meet the accessibility needs of all students, faculty and staff, while creating a physical environment that is functional and aesthetically pleasing. The upper-level expansion includes an open student lounge with access to natural light, a quiet study area, and three state-of-the-art flexible classrooms.
Upon its re-opening in summer 2020, CUNY in the Heights rolled out new credit-bearing course offerings for an expanded range of associate degree programs, as well as professional development and advanced career certification through BMCC’s Continuing Education and Workforce Development division and the SUNY Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center. In keeping with its mission, students who attend CUNY in the Heights receive on-site support and advisement to complete educational pathways toward a college degree and career advancement.
