CUNY Assessment for English and Math Proficiency

CUNY Proficiency Requirements

The City University of New York (CUNY) requires that all students demonstrate proficiency in English and Math by meeting CUNY’s proficiency requirements or through eligible college transfer credit.

Proficiency Index

Starting with all Spring 2020 applicants, students who do not meet CUNY’s required scores on SAT, ACT, or New York State Regents exams will be assessed by CUNY’s proficiency index for course placement in English and Math. Students deemed as potential English as a Second Language (ESL) who do not meet CUNY’s English proficiency requirements including those who do not meet CUNY’s English proficiency index benchmark score are assessed via the ESL Diagnostic Assessment (ESLD).

To ensure correct course placement, submit your transcripts to Admissions.

Students are required to see an Academic Advisor to discuss developmental intervention options and additional degree program course placement information.

Students should also make sure to complete the after you’re admitted steps to enroll for course registration. For international students please review the after you’re accepted steps to enroll for international students.
